Graduates, a sometimes deserted village in the middle of unspoilt nature in the south-eastern part of the Šavrin Hills, has been recruiting new inhabitants for several years. But let's start from the beginning. The village, which is the furthest village in the municipality of Koper, is said to have been founded in the time of the Venetian Republic. The first references to the village date back to the 18th century.

The legend of the village name

Legend has it that an Istrian farmer, surnamed Perič, wanted to build a house in one of the surrounding villages. Since he was not allowed to do so, he went to a no-man's land, planted his first shovel and said: "Tu ću abitat!" ("I will live here"). This is how the village is said to have got its name.

Characteristic Istrian architecture

Abitante is characterised by Istrian stone architecture with dry stonework. This means that people built houses with their own hands and without binding materials, which today represent a rich cultural heritage. In 1987, Abitanti was declared a cultural monument of local importance and entered in the Register of Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia.
Abitanti has only one "street", along which we can observe stone courtyards with stone buildings, which have the characteristic baladurje and volts or arcs. The village has no running water, but plenty of "four" (wells).

Due to its location, the locals have always been involved in agriculture and viticulture, and you can find 150-year-old Abitant Refosco vines in the village. These two vines have been identified by oenologists as a speciality worth preserving, as they differ in some respects from the normal refosco vine. The leaves are smaller and more serrated, the cluster is more triangular in shape and has a red stem. In the surrounding area, the local people have their own olive groves, fig groves, cherry groves, nectarine groves, peach groves and other fruit groves.

Life in the village

In the "best of times", Abitanti was home to 150 people and 120 head of cattle. Gradually, however, people moved away to nearby towns and the village lost its last inhabitant in 2000. Until 2009, the village was lonely until Mr Gracijan Perič moved back to Abitante and started to revive the village. Currently there are about 10 people living here.
